RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK

Re-registration process has begun for the upcoming religious education year

DSC_0332One of the promises that parents make when having their children baptized is “accepting the responsibility of training [their child] in the practice of the faith” and it is the parents’ duty to “bring [them] up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us.” This training begins in the home and the Church supports parents in this responsibility by offering Religious Education – either through a Catholic school or a Religious Education Program. The Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) here at OLPH Parish offers a variety of class meeting times and days, all meant to reinforce what your children are learning from you. Please contact our office to find out more about how we can help you nurture the gift of faith that you have accepted from God on behalf of your child.

The PREP of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help parish is committed to a dynamic partnership with parents in the religious education of their children. Parents, by word and example, teach their children from birth throughout life. In our classes, we seek to provide the catechesis and skills building needed for each child to grow and mature, as far as each is able, in understanding, positive attitudes, and faithful practice of the Catholic faith (see I Cor. 13:11).

DSC_0279We strive to assist each child in committing him or herself to a relationship with God characterized by a lifelong pattern of sacramental life, prayer, Christian service, and growth in understanding of the Catholic faith. To accomplish this goal, the PREP classes meet most Sundays during the months of September through April.

For children who may have difficulty succeeding in a regular classroom setting, modifications can be made in the regular classroom setting to ensure the success of every child. We also offer an intensive two-week program for those families that do not wish to attend the Sunday classes. For more information about these programs please contact the office.

The Parish Religious Education Program (PREP), under the direction of Ms. Nancy Riddell, is staffed by volunteers serving as catechists, aides and monitors. Our office secretary is Mrs. Terri Moncrief. We are all committed to an active partnership between program and families, and we place our efforts with confidence in God’s loving hands. If you feel the call to help support this mission of the Church as a teacher (catechist) or aide, please contact us.

Religious Education Program Days and Times
The Sunday Program (K-8) will start in September at 9:40 AM to 10:50 AM.  The Monthly Family Program (K,1, 3-7) is held on the 1st Thursday of the month October – April and runs from 6:30-7:30 PM with home schooling. All second and eighth graders in the Monthly Program must attend additional sessions for sacramental preparation.

Two week Intensive Program
OLPH offers a two-week intensive program in the summer for grades K-8. Along with the mandatory two weeks, there is also a requirement of 4 additional sessions. Two will be family sessions and two will be student sessions held on Sunday afternoons. These dates will be determined during the summer program. Attendance at ALL sessions is required to be eligible for the summer program next year (2018) and students scheduled to receive Confirmation. Forms will be made available on the website and in the office well in advance of the Intensive Summer Program.

DSC_0141Family Monthly Program
Our Family Monthly program is held the first Thursday of every month beginning in October and ending in April. At least one parent must attend with the student. If a parent is consistently unable to attend, the student will be reassigned to the weekly Sunday class. The parent(s) is also expected to home school during the month with the material given them. The Family Monthly Program also requires periodic supplemental sessions TBA.

Spanish Speaking Program
Our Lady of Perpetual Help offers the Spanish Speaking Religious Education Program at the St. Nicholas site on Sundays from 9am – 11:30am. in the St. Nicholas school building.

Any changes to the registration fees and schedule will be announced at a later date. If you have any questions, please call 609-652-0008, ext 208.
